Yemen’s Houthi rebels are actively engaging in direct confrontation with the United States, according to the organization’s leader, Abdul-Malek al-Houthi, in a recent televised speech. The rebels are determined to persist in their campaign of attacks on ships in the Red Sea until Israel’s blockade of Gaza is lifted. This comes amid an escalation of U.S. strikes on Houthi targets, with President Joe Biden acknowledging that the military actions taken so far have not achieved their intended effect.
President Biden stated that the ongoing military efforts are not halting the activities of the Houthi rebels, and he confirmed that the strikes will continue. The White House recently redesignated the Houthis as a terrorist organization, reversing the delisting that occurred in 2021. The U.S. carried out its fifth airstrike against Houthi targets, targeting anti-ship missiles in the southern Red Sea.
In response to U.S. actions, the Houthi rebel group, backed by Iran, launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles at a U.S.-owned tanker named the Chem Ranger. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damage to the vessel. In a defiant hour-long speech, Abdul-Malek al-Houthi expressed pride in directly confronting America and claimed that U.S. and U.K. strikes only enhanced his military’s technology.
The Houthi leader asserted that the rebel group’s strategy, which focuses on Israeli ships or those associated with Israel, is effective. The actions of the Houthis have indeed disrupted transport and seaborne trade in the region, leading major ocean carriers to suspend Red Sea and Suez Canal transport, opting for routes around Africa. This has resulted in significant delays, supply bottlenecks, and substantial financial losses for companies.
Al-Houthi took a personal jab at President Biden, mocking him as an elderly man traveling thousands of miles to attack those supporting the oppressed people of Gaza. The Houthi rebels, who control most of Yemen, initiated their attacks in response to Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip and perceived U.S. support for it.
The rebel leader pledged to continue the attacks until Israel lifts its blockade of Gaza, emphasizing that no threats, missiles, or pressure will alter their position. The conflict between Israel and Gaza, triggered by a terror attack by Hamas militants, has resulted in a significant loss of life and severe disruptions to food supplies in the besieged territory.
